FDA Investigating Mislabeled Seafood Products

News sources reported that, according to the National Fisheries Institute (NFI), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is implementing harsher reviews of seafood species substitution, such as when less desirable and cheaper fish are labeled as expensive varieties.

FDA officials have stated that they will start DNA testing 100 samples of fish from imports, warehouses and distribution centers using DNA bar coding. This process will include extracting genetic material from the samples of fish and comparing it to standardized gene fragments to ensure that the fish is labeled correctly.

An NFI press statement said, “Because FDA believes much of the species mislabeling happens at the retail level it also has plans to collaborate with the state regulatory agencies as part of the crackdown.”

In the future, the FDA plans on testing roughly 1000 seafood samples. However, the FDA is guarded about the actual process it will use. FDA spokesman Douglas Karas said, “I’m sure you understand that it would compromise our sampling program if we broadcast the specifics of what we were going to sample.” Karas did say that “as part of (the FDA’s) routine surveillance sampling program for seafood fraud,” they’ll be running at least 100 samples through DNA bar code testing to identify the correct species.

General Motors, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, announced the recall of some 2008-2009 Pontiac G8s due to faulty safety features in the vehicles. The vehicles feature dual-stage airbags that could injure certain individuals occupying the front passenger seat. The problems are with the electronics that control the airbags in the front passenger area and their deployment timing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is concerned that the airbags may increase the risk of injury to some passengers when occupying the front passenger seat. General Motors is recalling the vehicles for repair and will reprogram the airbag timing free of charge.

The problem lies with a t-bolt which may fracture when subjected to stress or load. If this t-bolt fractures, the v-clamp assembly may be damaged and result in a release of hot gases prior to them exiting out of the tailpipe. This poses possible fire and road hazards to consumers. On the models being recalled, an authorized Cummins Dealer will make the appropriate repairs at no cost to the owner. Vehicles involved in this recall were manufactured from September 1, 2010 until December 31, 2010.

Bicyclist Fatally Injured in Malibu Accident

News sources reported that a 51-year-old cyclist was fatally injured in an accident on Las Flores Canyon Road near Malibu Saturday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the rider, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was riding his bike on Las Flores Canyon Road just north of Hume Road around 11:45am when he drifted across to the wrong side of the roadway. Las Flores Canyon Road is known throughout the area to contain many sharp curves and to be a challenging ride for even experienced riders. The man, for reasons yet to be determined, struck a guardrail and was ejected, head first, from his bicycle over the handlebars.

The 51-year-old cyclist sustained severe head injuries in the accident and was taken by helicopter to UCLA Medical Center where emergency crews pronounced him dead approximately one hour later.

CHP officials are still investigating the cause of the accident, however, the man’s brother, who was riding with him at the time, indicated that it was simply an accident.

Oysters Recalled Due to Presence of Norovirus

In a press release, Korean Farms, of Santa Fe Springs, CA, in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), announced the voluntary recall of their frozen oysters packed under the ASSI brand after a random test sample revealed the presence of norovirus types I and II.

The affected frozen oysters were packaged in 3-pound bags that were labeled “Individually Quick Frozen Oyster” and had a “shucked date” of February 24. The “use by” date on the packaging was written as “2013.02.232.” The oysters were distributed throughout the western United States after being packaged in Santa Fe Springs.

Norovirus can result in acute gastroenteritis and displays symptoms of nausea, diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting and abdominal pain. The incubation period for the virus can be as little as one day, and can affect the victim for up to two weeks. The FDA has confirmed that neither the company, nor the FDA, have received reports of serious illness related to this recall. However, three people have fallen ill after consuming the product in Washington.

Consumers are being urged to discard the product in sealed, double-strength trash bags so that the virus cannot spread to local wildlife.

Rancho Cordova Teen Injured in I-80 Accident

News agencies reported that an 18-year-old Rancho Cordova woman more than likely fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 80 Saturday morning, resulting in a single-vehicle accident.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the woman was traveling in the far right eastbound traffic lane of Interstate 80, west of Mace Boulevard, at highway speeds when, for unknown reasons, her vehicle drifted across all traffic lanes and onto the dirt center median. The woman’s vehicle then swerved back across the interstate onto the dirt shoulder and struck a large tree and fence head-on at approximately 5am.

The 18-year-old woman sustained severe injuries in the accident and emergency crews were forced to extricate her from the wreckage. The woman was then transported to UC Davis Medical Center for the treatment of her injuries. No update on her condition has been provided.

While the CHP is still investigating the cause of the accident, officials have stated that it is possible she fell asleep while driving. Authorities have further stated that there is no evidence the woman had been drinking and driving.
